Day 1 of 5: The Youngest Disciple
If you are like me, when you think of Jesus’s original disciples you likely picture grown men. This is partially because our images of biblical characters come from artist renditions that are not based on fact, but more so on personal preference and imagination. It is likely, however, that Jesus’s disciples teenagers and young adults because young men began their training with a Rabbi as early as thirteen.
The youngest of the disciples was John. Most scholars believe that John was fifteen or sixteen when he began following Jesus. Some scholars would argue that he was as young as thirteen or fourteen. He was the youngest and arguably one of the most impactful, especially for young believers who have made a devotion to follow Jesus.
Over the next few days I will share my reflections on John, the youngest disciple, in hopes that through his life you would feel empowered and emboldened to live out the Gospel without fear.
Prayer: Lord God, I know that you call and equip all people for your purpose regardless of age, background, or creed. Help me to be bold, help me to be courageous and steadfast in you.
Declaration: God calls disciples no matter their age. I may be young, but I am willing!
