Day 1 of 3: Taking Time to Ponder What I Value
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
-Matthew 10:29-31 (NIV)
Oftentimes, what the world values is not the same as what God values. For example, the world might place high value on a person because of their wealth, status, or even their physical appearance; whereas, Scripture tells us that God values what’s inside a person’s heart.
In Jesus’s day, two sparrows were sold for a penny, so the value placed on them was not high, but Jesus said that not one sparrow was ever out of God’s line of sight. God sees each one. God knows every movement of every sparrow, and He is aware of each sparrow that falls from the sky.
It’s helpful to take some time to consider what is of value to us. Do we recognize and appreciate the kindness we see in others? Do we place value in the tiny creatures that God has made? Sometimes, in the busyness of life, it’s easy to lose track of what we value; of those things that make our hearts dance and our spirits sing. It could be a kind gesture that someone made toward us, the shape of a maple leaf, or the smell of the salty ocean. It could be seeing the beginnings of a flower you planted, the wind blowing across your face while riding in a boat on a lake, or the sight of the sun glistening off of the side of a building.
Take a moment to think of a person that you value, or a kind gesture that someone made toward you or someone else. Then take time to think about some of the things God has created that you value. Write them down, and beside each one, write at least one reason you value and appreciate that person, gesture, or thing.
