El-Roi: The God Who Sees You

Sylvia Ofem

Day 1 of 5: God Sees You

The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. And he said “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered. She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the one who sees me.”
–Genesis 16:7-8, 13 (NIV)

A lot of times we think we are alone and that God does not see our pain, the betrayal we may be facing, the hurt that comes with broken relationships, or the grief over losing a loved one. But through all of these and more, God sees us. God’s eyes stay glued to us even when we are in so much anguish that words would never be able to describe in detail the magnitude of what we are really dealing with.

Hagar was just a young lady who never expected her life to take the turn it did. In reality, nobody ever plans for the worst things to come their way; we all want that picture-perfect life without any hitches, potholes, steep valleys, or bumpy roads. But no matter what paths we find ourselves on, God remains faithful and intentional in watching over us.

Hagar was at her worst point when she had an encounter with the angel of the LORD — an encounter that resuscitated hope, giving her full confidence that God was a witness to all she was going through in the hands of her mistress. Your “mistress” that you’re dealing with may be your boss, your spouse, a wrong decision, an addiction, a relationship gone wrong, domestic violence, sexual abuse, a terminal illness, etc. And you may keep wondering and asking, “God, where are you? God, are you seeing this? God, why are you letting this happen to me?”

I want you to know that God sees you, just like He saw Hagar. Hebrews 13:5 says “never will God leave you; never will God forsake you” (NIV). God sees all of you, inside and out. And God gives assurances through His Word that we are not alone. Hagar understood clearly that her “name was engraved on the palms of His hands and her walls were ever before Him” (Isaiah 49:16, NIV). She experienced something amazing: the glimmer of victory and confidence in the reality of knowing that God had His eyes on her,

Live today with the confidence that God has His eyes on you.

Prayer:
Father, help me live through every day knowing you are El-Roi (the God who sees me), teach me to walk in the confidence of having your eyes on me. In Jesus name. Amen.
