Day 1 of 3: Peace Personified
I can recall countless times that I was taught in Sunday school that Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27, NKJV). At that time, peace appeared to be an otherwise whimsical thing, or a word often used in the New Testament. The peace that Jesus spoke is, in fact not a couple of words written in blank ink on paper. This peace is the weapon by which we deconstruct the lies of the enemy as scripture puts it “And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly” (Romans 16:20, NKJV).
The world introduces peace as the absence of something. The absence of problems, the absence of stress, no worry, and no drama, for example. But scripture teaches us that Peace is a person. It is the person of Jesus Christ. Prophet Isaiah prophesied that He shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6, NKJV)
In the Kingdom of God, Peace is the presence of Jesus Christ in any situation. It does not really matter how dark that situation is. The presence of Jesus is light and peace in that very situation. A lightbulb does not beg the darkness away. It does not shoo it away or pray it away. It is simply there, and we find that the darkness is no more because it could not coexist with the light. Such is the presence of Christ!
Peace as the world defines it can be attained in multiple different ways. The thrill of a new pink handbag, a pop of sleep tablets… the examples are endless, and I cannot exhaust all of them here. And yet we all know these methods just don’t last, moreover, they have the tendency to leave us sick with guilt. This is very different from the peace that God gives us. God offers us Rest, complete security, and peace in Christ. Rest “in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7, NKJV).
Prayer
Dear Lord, You, a good Father who has not withheld any good thing from us. You have given us, complete peace, through Jesus Christ. We ask that the very presence of Christ fill our hearts and our minds today. That we may be able to think thoughts that are good, thoughts that are lovely, and thoughts that are pure. Bless us with the reassurance of your presence when we cry out to you and help us put on the helmet of salvation that protects our minds from the fearful thoughts from the enemy for You, Lord, have promised us that You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You. In Jesus’s Name.
