Day 1 of 4: Carina Nebula
In the beginning was the Word, but what was the Word? Before logos, before science and theology, human knowledge of God or anything else, God was. Chaos, darkness, the wind of God, existed totally outside of the consciousness of the created, and in a way, it still does. No one has ever seen God. Only the Word can make God known.
The Webb telescope is nothing like a human eye. Aimed at a minute section of the universe, it measures how much light emits from even more minute points on a matrix. The people who operate the telescope collect this data and use it to tell a story of shapes and colors, pregnant swirls of dust glowing through a haze of stars. A glimpse of the process of creation, a brief intimate moment with our Creator.
How sad our little corner of the universe seems sometimes, how hopeless our people have been. And how very beautiful it was when these images took us by surprise, reminding us of the luminescent majesty of logos – the Word at the beginning of our story. May the knowledge of this majesty shine in our hearts; may the darkness not overcome it.
