Introduction
In the midst of Lent each year comes a trailer for Christmas, full of potent prophecy. Working backwards from December 25th and accounting for a typical nine-month pregnancy, an angel has to come to a young woman in a tiny village in the middle of March. Lent leads us on a journey of self-discipline, where we may give up on some of our material pleasures or take on a spiritual task. The angel’s proclamation reminds us why we stay the course: we are promised that if we can be faithful in our waiting, God will come and dwell with us. In a season that often leads us into barren desert lands, we are reminded that life springs up around us in the most unlikely places, and that God will invite us into co-creating newness and wholeness, even as the world is falling apart.
This devotional is for those who feel the call to create new life in any way. It focuses on the figures of Mary and Joseph, two unlikely heroes who brought new life to the entire world. We will zig-zag through the Gospels to highlight just a few moments in the extraordinary lives of these ordinary folk, tying their story into our story, as we become God-bearers, care-takers, and co-creators of God’s dream for humanity. Like all family stories, ours has both mundane moments and divine intervention. And, of course, angels—holy ones who call us to greater challenges while reminding us not to be afraid.
