Day 1 of 6: Introducing Rahab
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
-2 Tim 3:16 (KJV)
By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.
-Heb 11:31 (KJV)
Are you familiar with the story of Rahab? She is a fascinating woman who lived in the city of Jericho at a critical point in Israel’s history. Moses had just died and Joshua was named their new leader. He was on the brink of leading the children of Israel across the Jordan river and into the promised land. This was huge. This is what they had been waiting for decades and generations.
In preparation for the raid, Joshua sent two spies ahead to survey the land, and we see in Joshua 2:1 that these men entered the house of Rahab, but they were found out pretty quickly. Someone told the king that they were there, so the king sent his men to pursue them, and they went straight to Rahab’s door. What she did next left an indelible mark on the history of Israel.
Too easily, many women and their contributions can be overlooked or ignored. Too often, the women are invisible. The story of Rahab, who was described as a sex worker, is too important to ignore because we can learn a lot from her courage, her faith, and her strength.
Over these next five days, we consider how the life and faith of this sex worker in the Old Testament can challenge us to be better in the 21st century.
