Day 1 of 5: Stillness is Necessary
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!”
-Psalm 37:7 (ESV)
Society tells us that we must GO, GO,GO from the time we wake up until our head hits the pillow. I’ve fallen victim to this thinking more than once, as I’ve often associated busy-ness with success. But in recent months I’ve found that God’s word is quite contradictory to this stance. In moments of stillness and downtime is when I hear from God most clearly. There isn’t time to hear from God when I’m commuting in traffic with the radio blasting, or scrolling on social media during a lunch break, or binging a favorite show until all hours of the night.
"Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10, ESV) wasn’t a recommendation, but a command. As a follower of Christ, it’s necessary for me to have these moments of stillness and rest with God, so that he isn’t just an afterthought in my busy life, but at the center of it. I can schedule my entire week with things that keep me busy and make me feel a sense of accomplishment once I complete them; but if I never stop to pause and acknowledge God in any of it, how successful am I actually?
Stillness is not only good, but necessary. When I find myself purposely avoiding moments of stillness, I know it’s usually because my flesh is battling my spirit to hear what God needs to tell me during that time.
It’s not always easy to just sit still and shut out what’s going on in your life, but even just 10 minutes of pause in your day can do you good.
As you go about your day today, find moments of stillness and allow yourself to hear from God, however he chooses to make himself known.
